Writing
Versions & history
Every section can hold three texts: Version A, Version B and Scratch. Only one is shown in the song at a time, so you can try a different second verse without losing the first. Each version also keeps its own history of earlier texts you can go back to.
Where to find it
- The version button in a section's gutter, right of the label chip, shows the version in view: A, B or S. It stays faint while the section has only Version A.
- ⋮ beside it has Copy this to, Copy from, Version history and Clear this version.
- Versions in the side panel shows the versions of the section the caret is in, with Version History.
- The
/menu's This section group lists the other versions and Version history.
A, B and Scratch
- Version A is the main text of the section.
- Version B is a second take to compare against it.
- Scratch is a notepad for the section: half-lines, rhymes you might use, a line you cut but can't let go of.
The song always shows one version of each section, and that is what Preview, copying, Hear it sung and your co-writers see. Different sections can show different versions.
Step by step
- Click the version button (A) of a section and pick Version B. An empty version says empty in the menu.
- Write the new take. Version A is kept, untouched.
- Switch back and forth from the same button to compare.
- When B wins, choose Promote to A in the version menu. B's text becomes Version A and the old A moves to B, so nothing is lost.
From ⋮ you can also:
- Copy this to → Version B (or another): copy the text in view over another version.
- Copy from ← Version A (or another): replace the text in view with another version's.
- Clear this version: empty the version in view.
Whatever a copy or a clear replaces goes into that version's history first.
Version History
- Open it from ⋮ → Version history, from Versions → Version History in the side panel, or with
/→ Version history. - On the left, Now (unsaved) is the current text, and below it the earlier ones, newest first, each with its time and a short summary.
- Click one to read it on the right.
- Under Copy this version to: pick A, B or Scratch. InnerHook shows the changes and asks Replace content in Version A?; choose Replace (or Cancel).
A snapshot is saved by itself when you stop typing in a section for 30 seconds, move the caret to another section, switch versions or leave the page, and before a copy or a clear. When you join two sections with Backspace, the lower one's other versions and history go into the upper one's history.
Undo and redo
- Undo: ⌘ Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux).
- Redo: ⌘ ⇧ Z (Ctrl+Shift+Z on Windows and Linux).
Each command is one step: a moved, deleted or retyped section, a version switch, Detect structure or an accepted AI suggestion comes back whole with one undo.
In a shared song, undo only undoes your own changes. If a co-writer is typing in the chorus while you rework the bridge, your undo takes back your bridge edits and leaves their chorus alone. See Co-writing live.
