Sections & song form

A song in InnerHook is one page of text split into sections: Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, Intro, Outro, and Part for a section whose type isn't known yet. Each section has a label chip beside it, and the labels number themselves as you write.

Where to find it

Each section has a small gutter on its left with the label chip (for example Chorus 1), the version button (A, B or S, see Versions & history), ⋮ for the section's actions and a handle to drag it. A quiet + under the last section adds one at the end.

Start a new section

  • Enter twice. Press Enter on an empty line and that blank line becomes the border between two sections. Pressing it on an empty line in the middle of a section splits the section there.
  • The + under the song adds a section at the end.
  • The / menu. Type / and pick a type (below).

To join a section with the one above it, put the caret at its very start and press Backspace.

Labels and the song form

Labels are never typed: they come from the order of the song, so moving a chorus renumbers everything (Verse 1, Chorus 1, Verse 2, Chorus 2…). A Part is labelled just Part, with no number.

A new section follows the usual song form: Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus, Outro, then Verse again. If the song already has a Pre-Chorus somewhere, a new section after a verse is a Pre-Chorus. If you'd rather every new section start as a Verse, open the song brief (Settings in the side panel) and under Section types choose Always Verse instead of Follow the song form. It's a setting of the song, so your co-writers get the same behaviour.

Change a section's type

  1. Click the section's label chip (or press Shift+Tab in its text to reach the chip, then ↓).
  2. Pick a type from the menu: Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, Intro, Outro or Part.

You can also pick a type under Tools in the side panel, or type / alone on an empty line of an otherwise empty section and choose from Turn this section into…. A type change is one undo step.

The / menu

Type / at the start of a line, or after a space, and a menu opens; keep typing to filter it ("/cho" finds Chorus, and Finnish names such as kertosäe work too). A / straight after a letter or number, as in 2/4, stays a plain character. ↑/↓ move, Enter picks, Esc closes and keeps what you typed.

  • Section — the types. Heading New section here… starts a new section of that type where the caret is; Turn this section into… changes the current one.
  • Write ✨ — Continue writing, Write a verse here, Write a chorus here, Ideas. These use AI (Claude); see The Space menu. The same group has Rhymes for "…" and Synonyms for "…", free word lists; see Rhymes & synonyms.
  • This section — Duplicate section, Move up, Move down, the other versions, Version history, Rewrite section ✨, Comment on this line, Record an idea, Delete section.
  • Song — Autodraft ✨, Song brief, Hear it sung ✨, Detect structure, Preview, Write mode, Today's pages.

The last row is always Close menu.

Move, duplicate and delete

  • Drag a section by its handle (the six dots) and drop it where the line shows.
  • ⋮ → Move up / Move down does the same from the keyboard.
  • / → Duplicate section puts a copy right after it.
  • ⋮ → Delete section removes it; ⌘ Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux) brings it back.

Paste a whole lyric

Paste lyrics with blank lines between the stanzas and InnerHook splits them into sections. A header line in square brackets names the type: [Verse 2], [Chorus], [Pre-Chorus], [Bridge]; [Hook] and [Refrain] count as a Chorus. A stanza without a header becomes a Chorus when the same words appear more than once in the paste, and a Part otherwise. A single stanza without a header simply joins the section you paste it into.

Copied lyrics carry [Verse 1]-style headers, so they paste back the same way. To bring in whole files, see Import lyrics.

Detect structure

While the song has a Part, a line under the hint says Some parts have no type yet. with Detect structure. You'll also find Detect structure in the header's ⋮ and in the / menu. It works without AI, by a simple rule:

  • a section whose words appear more than once becomes a Chorus;
  • a Chorus whose words appear only once becomes a Verse, and so does every Part;
  • other types stay as they are.

Fix a wrong guess from the chip, or undo it with ⌘ Z.
