Today's pages
Today's pages
Today's pages are a few minutes of writing without stopping and without fixing. Whatever comes. Nobody reads it but you, and the good lines can go straight into a song later.
Where to find it
- Today's pages in the rail on the left, with a small flame and the days in a row.
- The Today's pages card on Home. It says how today is going: Not started, the words so far, or Done ✓. Once you've begun, it opens today's page.
- The ⋮ menu in the song editor.
The page itself (/daily in the app) is headed Daily pages: the same thing, reached from Today's pages.
Step by step
- Open Today's pages.
- Under How long, pick 5 min, 10 min or 15 min.
- Under Something to start from, read the day's prompt: an everyday thing or place, and a sense to write it through (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, body or motion). Don't like it? Another one gives you the next. Prefer a blank page? No prompt, just write.
- If you want, tick No backspace: keep going, fix nothing.
- Press Start writing and go.
- When you're finished, move the mouse (or press Tab) and press Done.
The day's prompt
The prompt is the same all day, on every device. Another one steps to the next. The prompts were written by hand; no AI picks them.
No clock, just light
There are no numbers ticking while you write. Instead the page slowly gets lighter and a thin line along the bottom edge fills up. The line pulses softly once at half time and, on pages of 10 minutes or more, once more two minutes before the end. If you want to know exactly, move the mouse or press Tab: the controls show the time left in words, like "About 5 minutes left".
When the time is up, "Time. Keep going if it's flowing." fades in and out. Nothing stops and nothing locks. Keep writing as long as the words keep coming.
No backspace
With No backspace on, Backspace, Delete and cutting do nothing. You'll see a quiet "No backspace: keep going." Good for days when your inner editor is loud. You can also switch it from the controls while you write.
Your streak
A day counts when one of its pages is full: you wrote for the whole time you chose, or you wrote 300 words.
The rule for days off is simple: one day off in any seven keeps your streak going; two missed days in a row break it. A day off doesn't add to the streak, it just keeps it alive. Today never counts as missed while it's still today.
If a streak does break, the page just says "Welcome back." No guilt.
Milestones
Now and then a small card marks a milestone: 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, 100 and 365 days in a row, and 10,000 and 50,000 words in all. Each comes once. Press Thank you to put it away. There are no points, levels or comparing with anyone.
Your calendar
Beside the streak, the month shows each day's colour by how much you wrote, a dot on the days with a full page, and the days off. Below it, The last year shows the whole year at a glance. Click a day to see its pages: open one to read or keep writing, or Delete it (with Undo right there).
You can write more than one page a day. Today's pages are listed at the top so you can Continue one, or press Start another page.
Search your pages at the top finds words in everything you've written.
Save to lyrics
Found a line worth keeping? Select it and press Save to lyrics…:
- New song starts a new song with those lines as its first lines.
- Or pick one of your songs under Add to a song. The lines go to the end of the song as a new Verse (a blank line between them makes more than one section), and you'll see "Added to …" with Open song.
Adding the same lines again is safe: they won't be added twice.
The reminder
When you open InnerHook somewhere other than Home or Today's pages and haven't written today, a small note says "Your pages are waiting." with Write. It comes at most once a day, and only after you've written pages before. Untick Remind me when I open InnerHook and today's pages are still waiting to turn it off. There are no email or phone reminders.
Tips
- Short on time? A full five minutes keeps the streak just as well as fifteen.
