Getting started

The editor in 2 minutes

The editor is where a song is written. The whole song is one page of text: no boxes or forms to fill in. Here is what you see on it, with a link to each part's own page.

Sections and their labels

A blank line between stanzas makes a new section. Press Enter twice to start one, or type / at the start of a word and pick a type. Each section has a label (a chip) such as Verse 1 or Chorus 1: click it to change the type. Beside it are the section's version button, its ⋮ menu and a handle to drag it somewhere else. More in Sections.

Syllable counts and line numbers

Every line shows its syllable count in the margin, and the lines are numbered, so you can match a verse to the one before it. Syllables are counted in English or Finnish. More in Syllables.

Versions

Each section can hold three versions, A, B and Scratch, and keeps a history of earlier text. Try a different take without losing the first one. More in Versions.

The selection bubble

Select some words and a small bubble appears: Bold, Italic, Find synonyms, Find rhymes, Comment and Rewrite ✨. Rhymes and synonyms are free; Rewrite uses AI and costs credits. More in Rhymes & synonyms and Selection tools.

The Space menu

Press Space on an empty line to continue the song, write a verse or chorus there, or get Ideas. These use AI. More in The Space menu.

The side panel

The rail on the left has the app's places (Home, Songs, Profiles, Setlists, Today's pages, New song) and then the song's own views:

  • Autodraft: a draft of the whole song from its brief (Autodraft).
  • Tools: the type and label of the section the caret is in.
  • Versions: that section's A, B and Scratch, and its history.
  • Comments: the song's comment threads (Comments).
  • Takes: the song sung and your own recordings (Hear it sung, Recordings).
  • Settings: the song brief: genre, tempo, key, language, the idea and words (Tempo & key).

Click a view to open it over the text. The header's ☰ (or ⌘ \, Ctrl+\ on Windows and Linux) keeps it open beside the text.

The header

From left to right:

  • ☰ opens or closes the side panel.
  • The title: click it to rename the song.
  • Profile: the artist profile the song belongs to.
  • The faces of people who have the song open right now (Co-writing).
  • Share: invite co-writers or make a link (Sharing).
  • 🎧 Hear it: hear the song sung (Hear it sung).
  • Write mode (below).
  • The save status: Saved, Saving… or Offline, changes kept on this device.
  • ⋮ More: New song, Detect structure, Restore previous song (when there is one), Hear it sung ✨, Add to setlist… (Setlists), Preview (see the whole song, copy or print it), Today's pages and the font size.

Undo

⌘ Z undoes and ⌘ Shift Z redoes (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z on Windows and Linux). A suggestion you accept from a writing tool is one undo step, so one undo takes it back.

Write mode

Write mode hides everything but the words. The text moves to the middle of the screen and stays there as you type, and the other sections fade a little. Move the mouse or press Tab to see its few controls. Press ⌘ Shift Enter (Ctrl+Shift+Enter) to go in, and Esc to come out. More in Write mode.

Type to search: features, buttons, limits.
