# Comments & mentions

> Comments in InnerHook, a lyrics writing app: comment on the exact words of a song, reply, resolve threads and @mention co-writers.

Comments let you talk about the song right where it matters: on the words themselves. Select a line, leave a note, and your co-writers can reply, mention each other and mark it resolved when it's sorted.

## Where to find it

- **Comment** is in the bubble that appears when you select words in a song.
- The shortcut is ⌘ ⌥ M (Ctrl+Alt+M on Windows and Linux).
- All comments are in the **Comments** panel in the side panel. The badge on it counts the open threads.

## Step by step

### Add a comment

1. Select the words you want to talk about.
2. Press **Comment** in the bubble, or ⌘ ⌥ M.
3. Type your comment in the box beside the words. Press Enter to send, Shift+Enter for a new line, or Esc to cancel.

The words get a soft highlight, and the panel opens on your new thread. Clicking highlighted words opens their thread.

### Reply

Press **Reply** under a thread, write, and press Enter. Replying to a resolved thread opens it again.

### Resolve and reopen

When a thread is sorted, press **Resolve**. It moves from **Open** to **Resolved** at the top of the panel, and its highlight goes away. Press **Reopen** to bring it back.

### Edit and delete

You can **Edit** or **Delete** your own comments. Deleting the first comment of a thread deletes its replies too; you're asked first. The song's owner can delete anyone's comment.

## The Comments panel

The panel lists the threads in the order they appear in the song: the quoted words, who wrote each comment and when, and the replies. Click a thread (or press Enter on it) to jump to its words.

If the words a thread was on are deleted from the song, the thread isn't lost: it's listed under **On removed text**.

In [Write mode](https://innerhook.com/docs/write-mode/) there are no highlights. A small dot to the left of a line marks an open thread; click it to open the panel.

## @mentions

Type **@** in a comment to pick someone from the song's people: the owner and everyone it's shared with. Their name shows as **@Name** in the comment.

A mention sends that person an email, **if** they get comment emails (see below). People who have turned them off still see the mention in the panel.

## Emails

You get an email when:

- someone **mentions** you, or
- someone **replies** in a thread you've written in.

You never get an email about your own comments. Each email has the words the thread is on, the comment and a link straight to it.

To keep your inbox calm, you get at most one email per song in 10 minutes: the first comes right away, and anything after it arrives together in one email at the end of those 10 minutes.

To turn comment emails off (or on again), open the account menu at the bottom of the rail and untick **Email me about comments**. It's on to begin with.

## Links to a comment

The link in an email opens the song with the Comments panel open, the thread selected and its words in view.

## Who can comment

| Role | Read comments | Write, reply, resolve |

See [Sharing & roles](https://innerhook.com/docs/sharing/) for how to give someone a role.

## Tips

> **Tip**
>
> Comment on the smallest stretch of words you can. "never the receipt" is easier to find later than the whole verse.

- Use comments for questions and ideas; keep the lyrics themselves clean.
- Resolve threads as you go, so **Open** stays a real to-do list.

## Limits

> **Limits**
>
> - Comments are plain text, up to 5,000 characters. Web addresses become links.
> - Up to 30 comments a minute.
> - Comments are never shown on a [public read link](https://innerhook.com/docs/public-link/), and the AI never sees them.
