# Live co-writing

> Write a song together at the same time in InnerHook, a lyrics writing app: see each other's cursors and keep writing offline.

When you share a song, everyone who can edit it writes in the same song at the same time. You see each other's changes as they happen, letter by letter. There's nothing to send or merge.

## Where to find it

Open a song that you've [shared](https://innerhook.com/docs/sharing/) or that someone shared with you. That's all: live writing is always on in a shared song. A song shared with you says "Shared by" and the owner's name in the header.

## Who's here

- **Avatars** in the header show who else has the song open, with their initials in their own colour.
- **Cursors**: everyone's cursor is a line in their colour, with their name above it. When they select words, you see the selection too.
- In [Write mode](https://innerhook.com/docs/write-mode/) the cursors are quieter: a thin line, with the name when you hover over it.

People who can only view or comment have their cursor shown too, so you can see where they're reading.

## Writing at the same time

Type anywhere, even in the same line as someone else. Changes from everyone are merged as they come in, so nothing gets overwritten and there are no conflicts to sort out.

The title and the song brief are shared the same way: when someone changes the tempo or the key, you see it change.

### Saving

The status in the header tells you where your own changes are:

- **Saved**: the server has stored your changes.
- **Saving…**: on their way.
- **Not saved**: the server couldn't store them yet. It keeps trying.

Others typing doesn't keep you from **Saved**: it's about your changes.

## Undo only undoes your own changes

⌘ Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux) undoes **your** changes only, step by step. A co-writer's lines are never taken back by your undo, even if they typed after you.

## Versions in a shared song

[Versions](https://innerhook.com/docs/versions/) are part of the song, so everyone sees the same ones. A section's version history is shared too: if two of you change the same section, both of your snapshots are kept.

## Going offline

Lost the connection? Keep writing. The header says **Offline, changes kept on this device**, and your changes wait safely on your device. When you're back, "Reconnecting…" shows beside the avatars for a moment, then your changes and everyone else's come together.

Your waiting changes are kept on the device even if you reload the page or sign out, until the server has them.

> **No storage on this device?**
>
> If your browser can't keep data on the device (some private windows), the status says **Not saved** while you're offline. Keep the tab open until the connection is back.

## When access changes

- **Your role changes**: it takes effect right away. If you now only view, the song stops being editable.
- **You're removed**: you're told "You no longer have access to this song". If you had changes that never reached the server, you can **Save mine as a new song** (it becomes a song of your own) or **Discard** them.
- **The owner deletes the song** while you're writing: you're told "The owner deleted this song", with **Save mine as a new song** or **Discard**. If the owner restores it, it comes back for everyone it was shared with.

## Tips

> **Tip**
>
> Split the work by section. One of you drafts Verse 2 while the other tries a new Chorus in another version. Then read it through together.

- Leave notes for each other as [comments](https://innerhook.com/docs/comments/) instead of typing them into the lyrics.
- Want a co-writer's opinion without their edits? Give them **Can comment**.

## Limits

> **Limits**
>
> - Only the owner and people who can edit change the words. Viewers and commenters read along live.
> - Undo works on your own changes only.
> - The artist profile is the owner's choice. Co-writers see its name but can't change it.
