# Artist profiles

> In InnerHook, a lyrics writing app, a profile is a voice you write in: style, language, genres, themes, words and example songs the tools follow.

An artist profile is a voice you write in. It can be yourself, your band, an artist you write for, or a project or alias. You give it a style, a language, genres, themes, favourite words and words to avoid. Every song you write for that profile starts from there, and the writing tools use the profile so their suggestions sound like that voice.

## Where to find it

- **Profiles** in the app's rail lists your profiles as cards. Open one to see its picture, its songs and a few numbers, and click **Edit profile** to change it.
- To make one, click **New profile** on the Profiles page (or **Create your first profile** when you have none). You can also pick **+ New profile…** in the **New song** dialog.
- A song has one profile, or none: chosen at **Who is it for?** when you make it, and changed later in the **Artist profile** menu in the editor's header.

## Step by step: the profile wizard

A new profile starts with a short wizard: "Let's meet the artist. Seven quick questions. Only the name is needed."

1. **Who is this profile for?** Pick **Myself**, **My band**, **An artist I write for** or **A project or alias**, then give it a name.
2. **Which language do the words come in?** **Auto** (each song follows its own words), **English** or **Finnish**.
3. **Which genres feel like home?** Pick as many as you like, or write your own.
4. **How does the voice sound?** A few words for the voice.
5. **What do you keep writing about?** The things your songs come back to.
6. **Any words or images you love?** The ones that keep turning up in your lines.
7. **Any words you never want to hear?** Drafts and rewrites stay away from these.

Every question after the first has **Skip**. At the end, choose **Start a song** or **Open profile** (or **Back to the new song** if you came from the New song dialog).

## What a profile holds

On the profile page, **Edit profile** shows every field:

- **Who it's for** and **Name**.
- **Style**: in your own words, the voice, point of view, mood, imagery, and how the lyrics usually feel. For example: "First person, plain spoken, small-town details, dry humour that turns tender in the last verse, short lines". Describe traits rather than naming artists to imitate.
- **Language**: Auto, English or Finnish. Songs whose lyrics language is Auto are written in this language, and their syllables are counted in it too.
- **Genres**: a new song for the profile takes the first genre that is also one of the song genre choices.
- **Themes**, **Vocabulary** (favourite words and imagery) and **Avoid** (words, clichés or subjects this artist never uses).
- **Example songs**: see below.

Changes save as you type.

## The picture

On the profile page, click **Add a picture** (or **Change picture**), or drag an image onto the picture. JPEG, PNG and WebP images up to 5 MB work. The picture is cropped to a square and shown on the profile's card and page. Click **Remove** to take it away. Pictures are private to your account.

## Example songs

The AI can read up to **3** of the profile's own songs to pick up its tone and style. It never copies their lines. Under **Example songs**, choose one of these:

- **Automatic: the latest songs with lyrics**
- **Choose the songs**: tick the ones that show the voice best. Only the first three you choose are used.

The songs marked **Example** are the ones the AI reads: about 1,500 characters of their lyrics in all. The song you're working on is never its own example.

## How the AI uses a profile

Every writing tool sends the song's profile along with the request: [Rhymes & synonyms](https://innerhook.com/docs/rhymes-synonyms/), [Selection tools](https://innerhook.com/docs/selection-tools/), the [Space menu](https://innerhook.com/docs/space-menu/), [Reimagine](https://innerhook.com/docs/reimagine/) and [Autodraft](https://innerhook.com/docs/autodraft/). The profile is the background, and the song brief refines it. Where the two differ, for example on the genre, the song's own settings win. Rhymes and synonyms only get a light hint: the profile's favourite words and the words it avoids.

> **The name stays with you**
>
> The profile's **name is never sent** to the AI. The AI gets only the style you describe. If you mention a real artist anywhere in a profile, the AI treats it as a description of style and never imitates that artist. Writing for a real artist? Describe what makes their songs theirs, in your own words.

These tools use AI (Anthropic's Claude). Your lyrics are never used to train AI models. See the [privacy policy](https://innerhook.com/privacy/).

When you [share a song](https://innerhook.com/docs/sharing/), your co-writers' writing tools use the song owner's profile, so everyone writes in the same voice. Only the owner can change which profile the song has.

## Tips

- Specific beats general. "Kitchen-table details, never says 'love' outright" does more than "emotional".
- Fill in **Avoid** with the words you're tired of seeing, like "forever" or "tonight".
- Deleting a profile (**Delete profile**) keeps its songs. They just have no profile.

## Limits

> **Limits**
>
> - **Free**: 1 artist profile. **Pro**: up to 50.
> - If you reach the limit, you'll see "Your plan has room for 1 profile." It counts the profiles in your workspace.
> - Pictures up to 5 MB; up to 3 example songs per profile.

See [Plans & credits](https://innerhook.com/docs/plans-and-credits/) for what each plan includes.
